Donna is a U.S. Army veteran and an American hero. She is courageous and a brave woman who served her country proudly for 14 years and actively served during Desert Storm.
Asking for assistance is never easy and life can sometimes throw curve balls in our plans. Donna had to go on disability after retiring from the Army. “I make too much for SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamps) but the cost of living in Northern Virginia is very high. A one bedroom cost about $1,600. I plan on going back to work, but can’t at the moment,” she explained.
With nearly 1.5 million veterans struggling with hunger every year, it’s critical that those who have sacrificed so much for our country have access to healthy and nutritious meals.
More Than Just a Meal
Donna was grateful that the food was delivered directly to her front door. “Going to a food bank can be very degrading and to see healthy meals and packages delivered right to your door is so helpful,” she said. It’s not always easy to ask for help and she was initially hesitant about asking for assistance. “It’s very different than when I was a child and there was welfare cheese and canned foods that weren’t very healthy, however, this was healthy, which I appreciated.”
She was also able to use the meals to help her mother who is one of her neighbors. “My mom is a senior and I was able to share several servings with her too,” she said.
